Stephen Bamford FCSI (Retired) – Senior Board Advisor

Stephen is a member of the FMG

He spent most of his early career in the investment industry, holding senior positions at National Westminster Unit Trusts and Aetna Life & Casualty Inc, before founding GFM International Investors Ltd for Metropolitan Life of America. During his career, he won three public investment awards and was invited to become a Fellow of the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment (FCSI).

Since 2001, he has been involved in development capital for private businesses. He has held non-executive directorships at Fitness First plc, now one of the world’s largest health and fitness businesses, and at an environmental technology company that developed an innovative solution recognised for producing bacteria-free drinking water and for the effective treatment of polluted wastewater.

In 2013, he became a founding partner and board director of a green technology company, serving as its first Chairman through to its public listing in 2019. After more than 50 years in the City of London, he retired from corporate life in June 2020.

During his tenure as Chairman, he led the strategic direction that secured a long-term industrial partnership, removing chemical production risk and enabling a successful public listing. He also oversaw critical fundraising during the Covid-19 pandemic, ensuring the business remained well-capitalised through a period that proved challenging for many companies. Today, the company is regarded as a high-quality green technology business, and he remains a significant long-term shareholder.
